可能Hi-MD由於登場時間已是MD末期，加上技術的投入及權力金所需額外的投資，音響產品似乎僅Onkyo加入Hi-MD聯盟。許多人誤以為Hi-MD隨身聽僅有Sony一個人的武林，事實上尚有一位盟友加入。

Buffalo為日本PC周邊品牌商，以記憶體、存儲裝置、網路、鍵盤滑鼠等主業務，'75成立初期為音響生產製造商，後於'81年轉型至PC市場。

由Buffalo推出MD-HUSB應為Sony OEM機型，機身原型應來自歐美市場的MZ-NH600D系列。

小巧的口袋機身有著極圓潤的手感，隨角度變化的炫目變色龍塗裝機身，閃亮的Hi-MD銘牌映襯出Hi-MD科技宣言。機身上3行式液晶螢幕，專輯、歌曲及歌手等資訊一目了然地同時顯示。

配件為極其簡單的USB線及一副耳機，不具備線控操作，附屬軟體BeatJam for Buffalo支援MP3。作為網路隨身聽的定位機器本身無法錄音，但可透過USB與PC連結傳輸高音質PCM、ATRAC3plus並向下相容所有MD音樂格式的Hi-MD，Hi-MD碟片最大可收納45小時音樂，隨身聽傳輸時由USB直接連結PC，並支援由PC供電。

搭載6 Band Equalizer，可於100kHz ~ 10kHz範圍內微調個性化音場。機身採AAx 1供電，最大達26小時續航(LP4)。

另外Hi-MD雖然可當作資料存儲媒體，但音樂檔案須藉由BeatJam for Buffalo寫入著作權保護才能於HUSB上撥放。

Perhaps because Hi-MD was introduced during the twilight of the MiniDisc era, and due to the substantial investment required for both technology development and licensing fees, only Onkyo seemed to join the Hi-MD alliance among audio manufacturers. Many people mistakenly believe that Sony was the only warrior in the Hi-MD world, but in fact, there was one more ally.

Buffalo, a Japanese brand best known for PC peripherals such as memory, storage devices, networking equipment, keyboards, and mice, was originally an audio equipment manufacturer when it was founded in '75, before shifting to the PC market in '81.

The Buffalo MD-HUSB was most likely an OEM model produced by Sony, with its base design derived from the MZ-NH600D series sold in Europe and North America.

The compact, pocket-sized body feels pleasantly rounded in hand. Its chameleon-like color finish changes hues with the viewing angle, while the gleaming Hi-MD emblem highlights its technological identity. The front features a 3 line LCD display that clearly shows album, track, and artist information simultaneously.

Accessories are kept extremely simple—just a USB cable and a pair of earphones, with no remote control included. The bundled software BeatJam for Buffalo supports MP3 playback. Positioned as a network-oriented portable player, the unit itself does not support recording, but it can transfer high-quality PCM and ATRAC3plus audio via USB connection with a PC, while maintaining backward compatibility with all previous MD music formats. A Hi-MD disc can store up to 45 hours of music, and the player can draw power directly from the PC during USB connection.

Equipped with a 6-Band Equalizer, it allows personalized sound tuning across the 100Hz–10kHz range. The device runs on a single AAx1, providing up to 26 hrs of playback ( LP4).

Although Hi-MD can also function as a data storage medium, music files must be written via BeatJam for Buffalo with copyright protection enabled in order to be played back on the MD-HUSB.
