官方新聞稿指出：隨著家用MD音響的普及，隨身聽的需求由Recorder轉向Player。'97年夏天Player的月出貨量首次超過Recorder，今年夏天總出貨量預計也將出現逆轉。顯示了用戶需求越來越多樣化。對此Kenwood從多視角的用戶需求，為通勤・通學、旅行及車用音響打造易用性機型進行企劃、開發。

而DMC-J3就是一款適用多樣生活場景，展現便利性的User-Friendly機型。

機身中央隆起的大圓焦點有如操控中心的意象，獨特的大圓鍵易於按壓並以四角分散排列不僅防止誤按，放置於包包或口袋時也能輕鬆盲操作。還有對Player來說罕見却堪稱是焦點的迷你螢幕。整體方正的却能展現流行的動感，激發出獨特的潮流共鳴。

造型有些復古的兩截式兼容電池機身，可收納AA尺寸的鹼性電池或充電池的自由度同時，仍保有適切的17mm厚度，也仍可選購大容量外接電池盒(BC-C45)或車用套件(轉接器CAC-2、供電器DC-C70)。

未能與時俱進地配上'97年的背光線控，電子表意象的前衛形色上頗有Kenwood"潮味"，官小巧的螢幕最大6文字顯示，光碟狀態、音量、電量資訊等一目了然，Shift旋鈕以直覺的滑動讓操控更為行雲流水~

雖然Kenwood的MD隨身聽多被認為來自於Sharp的OEM，但J3的機身原型"似乎"頗受歡迎地也沿用至許多三線廠商的原創產品，堪稱是ODM之王。

Chic and Trendy 

The official press release stated: With the increasing popularity of home MD stereo systems, the demand for portable audio devices has shifted from recorders to players. In the summer of '97, the monthly shipment volume of players exceeded that of recorders for the first time, and the total shipment volume this summer is also expected to reverse, indicating increasingly diverse user demands. In response, Kenwood developed the DMC-J3, a user-friendly model designed for various user needs, such as commuting, traveling, and in-car audio use.  

The J3 is a versatile, convenient player suited for multiple lifestyle scenarios. Its design features a large circular focal point in the center, resembling a control hub. The unique oversized button is easy to press, and its four-corner layout prevents accidental operation while allowing for effortless blind control when placed in a bag or pocket. It also includes a rare yet eye-catching mini-screen for a player. The overall boxy shape manages to exude a sense of dynamic fashion, creating a distinct trend resonance.  

The slightly retro two-piece body accommodates both AAx 1 or rechargeable batteries while maintaining a compact 17mm thickness. Additionally, users can opt for accessories such as the high-capacity external battery pack (BC-C45) or the car kit (CAC-2 adapter and DC-C70 power supply).  

Despite missing the backlit remote trend that became standard in '97, the electronic clock-inspired design gives the J3 a distinctly "Kenwood trendy" aesthetic. The compact screen displays up to six characters, clearly showing disc status, volume, and battery information. The intuitive "Shift" dial allows for fluid, effortless control with a simple slide motion.  

Though Kenwood's MD players are often considered Sharp OEM products, the J3's body design seems to have been so well-received that it was adopted by several smaller brands for their original products, earning it the title of "King of ODM."
