'92年11月，為了取代卡式錄音帶而誕生的Mini Disc，以不失真的數位音質，輕巧的餅乾片尺寸、首台MD Player MZ-2P登場。

龐然大物的MZ-2P顯然不太符合次世代隨身聽該有的先端科技想像，與錄音版本的MZ-1雷同的體積大小，罕見的全電動進 / 退碟機構設計，獨立的光纖音源輸出等Sony第一世代MD限定的豪華配備。

按鍵群集約於右側為整體營造簡潔的機身視覺，並搭載簡單直覺的Shuttle Ring讓操作更為效率。

最大12 x 2文字的多元顯示螢幕，接上DC(使用充電器)時螢幕啟動背光照明。而重達170g巨大的充電池僅提供短促75分續航卻開出¥7,000天價，並且不支援外接電池盒的設計。

高貴的售價與巨大的體積，MZ-2P顯然離Walkman還有好一段距離，不過帶領研究走出實驗室，將夢想轉化為現實，Sony正式昭告世界繼卡帶後次世代音樂生活的宣言。

Big, Big and Big

In November '92, the Mini Disc was born to replace cassette tapes, offering pristine digital audio quality in a compact, cookie-sized package. The first MD Player, the MZ-2P, made its debut.

The MZ-2P, despite its imposing presence, didn't quite fit the futuristic tech image one might expect from a next-generation portable player. It shared the same dimensions as its recording counterpart, the MZ-1, featuring rare fully motorized disc loading/unloading mechanisms and standalone optical fiber audio output – all luxurious features limited to Sony's first-generation MD devices.

The buttons were neatly clustered on the right side, creating a clean visual design for the device. It also boasted a simple and intuitive Shuttle Ring for more efficient operation.

With a multi function display capable of showing up to 12 x 2 characters, the backlight activated when connected to DC (using a charger). The massive 170g battery offered a brief 75-minute playback time but came with a hefty price tag of ¥7,000 and lacked support for an external battery pack.

Due to its high price and substantial size, the MZ-2P was clearly quite distant from the Walkman, but it marked Sony's declaration to the world of the next-generation music lifestyle after the cassette era, leading research out of the laboratory and turning dreams into reality.
