當磁帶走向光碟

'92年11月，為了取代卡式錄音帶而誕生的Mini Disc，以不失真的數位音質，輕巧的餅乾片尺寸、還是夢幻的可錄音光碟，集所有優點於一身的次世代隨身聽MZ-1誕生

龐然大物，是MZ-1給人的第一印象，¥79,800的高昂定價更是拉開了與大眾的距離。繁多複雜的按鍵操作，罕見的全電動進 / 退碟機構設計，獨立的光纖音源輸入 / 出等在專業器材專屬的豪華配備，似乎也解釋了MZ-1如此極具分量的原因。

對應外部數位 / 類比 / MIC訊源錄音，搭載約3秒防震記憶避免震動，尤其MD的光磁原理特性，可簡單隨意地對將錄音內容執行合併、分割、移動、抹除等前所未有的的強大編輯性能。

最大12 x 2文字的多元顯示螢幕，接上DC(使用充電器)時螢幕啟動背光照明。170g巨大的充電池僅提供短促的錄60 / 放75分續航，卻很有勇氣的開出¥7,000天價。並且不支援外接電池盒的設計。

高貴的售價與巨大的體積，MZ-1顯然離Walkman還有好一段距離，"隨身背"的小型錄音座顯然更為合適。帶領研究走出實驗室，將夢想轉化為現實，Sony昭告世界繼卡帶後次世代音樂生活的宣言。

When Tape going to Disc

In Nov, '92 the Mini Disc was born as a replacement for cassette tapes. Offering pristine digital audio quality in a compact, cookie-sized, and dreamy recordable disc format, the next-generation portable player, MZ-1, was unveiled.

MZ-1 made a grand entrance with its imposing presence. Its hefty price tag of ¥79,800 only served to distance it from the masses. The plethora of intricate button operations, the rare fully motorized disc loading / unloading mechanism, and the standalone optical fiber audio input/output, among other luxurious features, seemed to justify the substantial weight of the MZ-1.

With the ability to record external digital / analog / MIC sources and equipped with a 3-second anti-shock memory to prevent vibrations, the MZ-1's robust editing capabilities allowed for unprecedented tasks like merging, splitting, moving, and erasing recorded content, all thanks to the unique optical-magnetic principles of MD.

Its multi-element display screen could showcase up to 12 x 2 characters, and the screen backlight activated when connected to DC (using a charger). The colossal 170g battery offered a brief 60-minute recording or 75-minute playback time, yet it boldly came with a price tag of ¥7,000 and didn't support an external battery pack.

With its lofty price and massive size, the MZ-1 clearly distanced itself from the Walkman, fitting more as a compact recording companion. Leading research out of the laboratory and turning dreams into reality, Sony declared to the world the next-generation music lifestyle after the cassette era.
