The Myth of Dual Functionality

The radio feature, commonly seen in portable cassette, is extremely rare in portable MD, possibly due to technical constraints or limited market demand. It wasn't until five years after the debut of MD that Sony introduced it.

The MZ-F40 features a hefty body with functional layout planning and a retro design language, reminiscent of something designed for the elderly.

The unique dual-block design on the body is eye-catching. At first glance, the dual screens and numerous control buttons might seem perplexing, but they actually separate the radio and MD functions into distinct zones. Sony likely invested heavily in this legendary model to ensure clear and straightforward operation.

In addition to supporting MD use, the F40 can receive AM (mono), FM (stereo/mono), and Japan-exclusive TV channels (1-12).

The body is compatible with rechargeable batterie or AA x2, eliminating the need for a bulky external battery pack. AA batteries are also easy to obtain. Additionally, in the Japanese market, the rechargeable battery and charger are included accessories, while in other markets they are optional.

It comes with basic wired remote control and uses a separate  design, allowing users to purchase replacements, but they are limited to Sony Micro Plug earphones.
