Mysterious Model

In '97, Sharp completely revamped its MD lineup, both inside and out, with most models achieving a pocket size (i.e., square body). The design language shifted from a combination of lines and squares to a focus on rounded shapes, reflecting a fresh and renewed aesthetic.

The MD-S301 (not sold in the Japanese market) and the MD-SS301 are almost identical, but the slight difference of a single letter in their model numbers is puzzling. It is unclear whether this distinction was made for specific countries or distribution channels.

Using a Slot In mechanism, it differs from the usual clamshell design with its tedious lid opening and closing. Instead, a single touch allows for smooth, horizontal disc insertion and ejection. However, Slot In mechanisms require more space, resulting in a thicker and heavier body.

The new LCD remote control features backlighting, illuminating the beautiful technological imagery whether outdoors or in low-light conditions.

The audio compression/decoding uses ATRAC 24Bit, delivering clear, extended sound with enhanced fidelity, providing a broad dynamic range and high sound quality.

The rechargeable battery offers play 6hrs but requires a rather long 3hrs for a full charge. Using AAx 1 provides an additional play 4hrs.
