Functionality first
Functionality above all else, everything else does not matter
The large compact button layout, along with the large R corner design language and striking Japanese lettering, the extremely thick body along with the complex assembled styling language, paired with the hard-edged steel gray metallic body, seems to convey the absolute priority and focus on functionality of the product.
The all new visual focal point is also the soul of this device - the "Jog Dial", which allows changing tracks and text input with a single finger rotation, making editing smoother and more efficient.
The elongated LCD screen simultaneously displays tracks, time, disc status, battery level and more. The new "Position Pointer" feature uses a dot array bar to display disc capacity for easy progress tracking.
Supports Mono REC, recording in mono channel format allows a 74 min disc to increase to 200% capacity of 148 mins. In the early days when MD blank discs were still expensive, this solved the penny-pinching time pressure pain points for non-music applications like meetings and lectures.
Equipped with basic remote control functions, and adopted a separate headphone design (Micro Plug) allowing users to purchase and replace their own headphones, but limited to Sony compatible models.
The new nickel-metal hydride rechargeable battery, although only providing a weak REC 2 / Play 3 hours runtime. But the highly functional body design can directly store the included rechargeable battery or AA x2 batteries, eliminating the need to carry a separate external battery case, and AA are easy to obtain.
