Sharp designers seem to have intended to create a stylish design with a combination of minimalism and concentrated planning, but the functional design makes the overall look look standardized, and the large and eye-catching main button further accentuates the volume of the device.
It features a "Sampling Rate Converter" to accommodate recording in different digital formats with varying frequencies, such as BS satellite broadcasts and DAT.
It supports Mono REC, allowing for mono recording and effectively doubling the capacity of 74min discs to 148min. During the early days when blank MDs were quite expensive, this feature addressed a significant pain point for non-musical use cases like meetings and speeches.
Perhaps as the first MD player to support Kana input, a feature that, while proud, was not very practical. It also includes powerful editing capabilities exclusive to MDs, such as track movement, merging, and splitting.
In contrast to Sony, which only included digital optical input/output in the first-generation MDs, Sharp retained the luxurious feature of digital optical input/output. It also features a detachable remote control with standard headphone jack specifications, allowing users to freely choose their headphones.
The built-in lithium rechargeable battery offers REC 2.5/ play 3.5hr of playback, but a full charge takes a lengthy 8 hours. Users can opt for the large external battery pack (AAx 6), which significantly extends recording time to REC 7 / play 12hr in one go.
